Know the warning signs.

As utility scams continue to be a nationwide issue. It’s important to recognize the warning signs to protect yourself and your bank account.

  • Unexpected phone calls requesting your account and billing information. If your utility company calls, the representative should have specific and accurate information related to your billing and account. Ask for it.
  • Threatening phone calls of any manner. This includes threats to disconnect your electric service if you don’t pay immediately, and insisting on a specific payment type, such as a prepaid debit card.
  • Showing up at your home unannounced without identification. Legitimate crews and contracts will always carry an official ID badge.

If something seems off – it probably is. Don’t be a victim!

What should you do?

Do not pay over the phone or call any number provided by the caller. When in doubt you should always:

  • Hang up the phone.
  • Report fraud to non-emergency police.
  • Call the number on your bill.
